NOTE: Pre-license instructor certification does not authorize an individual to teach continuing education or post-licensing courses. There is a separate procedure for continuing education/post-licensing instructors.
A certified real estate school may use an instructor who is already certified to teach pre-license courses. In this case, the school must submit a letter requesting the instructor be added to its list of certified instructors, including the instructor’s name and certification number.
If the instructor is not yet certified, the applicant must submit the Pre-License Instructor Application with the required $35.00 fee.
Requirements
- No person may act as a pre-license instructor, and no school may employ one, unless certified by the Commission.
- Applicants must provide proof of instructional experience and meet at least one of the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with a major in real estate from an accredited college or university.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and at least two years of real estate brokerage experience.
- A real estate broker license and a minimum of five years of experience in the area of proposed instruction.
- Juris Doctor (or equivalent) from an accredited law school and at least three years of experience in the area of proposed instruction.
- Two years experience as a qualified instructor or professor in the business of finance, or economics department of an accredited college or university.
- Other qualifications determined by the Commission to be equivalent to one or a combination of the above.
Teaching Experience
Applicants must qualify for instructor certification based on education and experience in real estate and related subjects. Teaching experience will only be granted for programs wherein the applicant was the principal instructor. Only formal classroom instructional settings will apply. Programs that do not qualify as teaching experience include online courses, committee reports, panel discussions, forums, meetings, planning, training or task group settings. Formal classroom instruction is a structured learning model that is designed to present a curriculum, which leads to earning credits, grades, and/or points toward a degree, certificate, professional designation, or license.
Additional Documentation
- Applicants must submit two letters of reference attesting to the applicants qualificvations and experience in teaching/lecturing.
- Provide a signed verification letter from the certified real estate school you will be teaching for.
Examination
- Once qualifications are verified, applicants will receive an email from Pearson Vue to schedule required examinations.
- Applicants must pass the instructor assessment exam that covers the national and state portions of the licensing exam.
- Applications are not considered complete, and certification numbers will not be issued until examination results are received.
The Commission will approve or deny applications within 45 calendar days of receipt. Incomplete applications or requests for additional information may extend this timeframe. Applications submitted after October 31 may be made effective January 1 of the following year.
